Teens, television and eating

I have three girls, two are in their teens and one in her twenties. They are always in a hurry and want junk food instead of what they should eat. This will come back to haunt them later in life and has already for my older daughter. To start somewhere with stopping the late night eating, why cannot we get the commercial industry to not advertise food products by law after 8 pm at night. Every single commercial is about food. Any wonder why so many Canadians and Americans are overweight or obese? Some one has to start some where.

  • I agree with mommy4. Most teenagers eat junk. I know I did and now I am a healthy eater. My kids eat junk, I explain the benefits of healthy eating but a burger once in awhile is ok. I don't think stopping "food" commercials would make a difference. More laws, what go would that do? Gee maybe we should make resturants close at 8pm.... All we can do as parents is guide our children.

  • My oldest is only 10, so we have not yet entered the teenage years. However, I imagine this to be a challenging time for health related issues (as well as many other things). You can no longer control much of what they do and are exposed to. And yet, they are not yet seeing "the big picture" and making the best choices accordingly. I know that when I was a teenager and young adult, my eating habits were horrible! But, when I was ready to get back to a healthy lifestyle the example I had received as a child made a huge difference. I feel very thankful that my mother taught me about healthy eating and still is an example that I refer to today.
